Winter has started early this year. Thousands of low temperature records have been set nationwide and here in Columbus Ohio we already have snow on the ground. In fact, as I write this we are 20 degrees below normal with high of 15 degrees. Brrrrr! Let's hope for an early spring!
The early snow and cold have caught a lot of people off guard in their winter car preparation routines which usually include a final coat of wax to help protect their finish during the cold winter months.
Well the good news is that there is a way to protect your car's finish with wax, even if you don't have the luxury of a heated garage!
When we do get a break in the weather you will see the typical long lines at the car wash.
People want to wash the salt, brine, dirt and grime off their cars.
We recommend the the self service coin operated type washes.
This will help in avoiding the scratching and marring to your finish that automatic car washes can cause.
Whichever method you choose to wash your car, most will towel it dry after the wash. Why not wax it at the same time?
This is extremely easy and doesn't require any more effort or time. Before you towel the vehicle dry, simply spray a "wax as you dry" product all over the vehicle while it is still wet then towel it dry. By doing this you will be adding protection while drying it at the same time!
Our recommended method is to set the sprayer to "stream". Spray the product all over your car while it is still wet from the wash. Be sure to coat the entire vehicle - including all the glass and trim, then simply towel it dry. These products will not leave any white residue on the trim, so no worries there.
I usually use 2 microfiber waffle weave drying towels. I use one for the first pass and wring it out as I go, them follow with the second towel for the final pass absorbing any remaining moisture. We recommend microfiber as it is less apt to scratch the finish.
Let's face it - if it is cold you likely don't do as thorough a job washing it as you would in warmer weather. The microfiber towels and will pick up any remaining grime and dirt that you might have missed during the wash like a magnet! You can also launder the towels so they will be fresh and clean for the next time that you use them.
Using a wax as you dry product when you wash during the winter obviously will help protect your finish from old man winter. It really doesn't get any easier than this.
There are other many benefits as well:
- The vehicle will be easier to keep clean as dirt, grime and salt will be less apt to stick to the finish.
- It will be easier to remove snow and ice from the finish.
- By applying the product to all the glass, it will repel rain and moisture from the windshield making it much safer and easier to see.
